MAN-HIS CREATION… Man was the consummation of God#39;s creation (1Corinthians 2:11-12); he was d, generally speaking, in God#39;s image and likeness (Gen 1:26-27), and specifically from the dust of the ground. 1CO 2:11 For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man#39;s spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 1CO 2:12 We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. GEN 1:26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” GEN 1:27 So God d man in his own image, in the image of God he d him; male and female he d them. God breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul (Gen 2:7). This was clearly an act of divine creation, not evolution, and is so stated by God and verified by the Lord Jesus (Matthew 19:4; Mark 10:6). GEN 2:7 the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. MAT 19:4 “Haven#39;t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator #39;made them male and female,#39; MAR 10:6 “But at the beginning of creation God #39;made them male and female.#39; Man is a tripartite being-spirit, soul, and a body (1 Th 5:23)- which principally constitutes his image of and likeness to God. 1.> Spirit… is the part of man able to contemplate God, the part that knows and is capable of distinguishing (1 Corinthians 2:11). 1CO 2:11 For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man#39;s spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 2.> Soul… is the part of man embodying the sensibilities, emotions, affections, desires, etc., and will (Psalms 42:1-6). PSA 42:1 As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. PSA 42:2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God? PSA 42:3 My tears have been my food day and night, while men say to me all day long, “Where is your God?” PSA 42:4 These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go with the multitude, leading the procession to the house of God, with shouts of joy and thanksgiving among the festive throng. PSA 42:5 Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and PSA 42:6 my God. My soul is downcast within me; therefore I will remember you from the land of the Jordan, the heights of Hermonfrom Mount Mizar. The “heart”, as used in Scripture, is practically the same as soul. Soul, too, is frequently used as the individual person (Gene- sis 2:7; 12:5). GEN 2:7 the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. GEN 12:5 He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Haran, and they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there. 3.> The physical body, subject to death… is the earthly abode of soul and spirit, and embodies the physical senses, the consciousness of which is conveyed to soul and spirit. The body of the saved, with soul and spirit, will be redeemed and forever glorified at the resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:47-50). The unsaved will be raised one thousand years later to a judgment of eternal condemnation (Revelation 20:11-15). 1CO 15:47 The first man was of the dust of the earth, the second man from heaven. 1CO 15:48 As was the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth; and as is the man from heaven, so also are those who are of heaven. 1CO 15:49 And just as we have borne the likeness of the earthly man, so shall we bear the likeness of the man from heaven. 1CO 15:50 I to you, brothers, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. REV 20:11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. REV 20:12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. REV 20:13 The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. REV 20:14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. REV 20:15 If anyone#39;s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire. MAN-THE NEW AND THE OLD… ROM 6:6 For we know that our ROM 6:6 Knowing this, that old self was crucified with our old man is crucified with him so that the body of sin him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that might be destroyed, that we should no longer be slaves henceforth we should not serve to sin sin. (KJV) In Romans 6:6, the “old man” is the unsaved man with all his evil desires and habits, the natural man himself. That man was crucified with Christ and is seen by God on that cross with His blessed Son. God counts the old man dead, and the believer is urged to make this so in actuality by “putting off” the old and “putting on” the new man (Colossians 3:8-14). COL 3:8 But now you must rid COL 3:8 But now ye also put yourselves of all such things off all these; anger, wrath, as these: anger, rage, malice, malice, blasphemy, filthy slander, and filthy language communication out of your from your lips. mouth. MAN#39;S NATURE… Man in the beginning was d a tripartite being. Hebrews 4:12 shows that soul and spirit of man are capable of being divided, thus proving they are not the same. HEB 4:12 For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Neither is the natural physical body (soma psuchikon, Greek) the same as the resurrection body, which is a spiritual body (soma pneumatikon, Greek) (1 Corinthians 15:44), though it consists of flesh and bones (Luke 24:39). 1CO 15:44 it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. LUK 24:39 Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.” There is a vast difference between soul and spirit in Scripture, the spirit being the part of man capable of knowing and distinguishing (1 Corinthians 2:11), in brief, the mind… 1CO 2:11 For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man#39;s spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. Whereas the soul constitutes the part of man which embraces the sensibilities, such as emotions, affections, desires, and the will, being similar to the “heart”, as used in Scripture (Matthew 26:38; 11:29; John 12:27). MAT 26:38 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” MAT 11:29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. JOH 12:27 “Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? #39;Father, save me from this hour#39;? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. The Hebrew word “nephesh” in the Old Testament, translated “soul”, is alike in meaning to the Greek word “psuche” of the New Testament, and the uses of the words are the same. The Hebrew word in the Old Testament for spirit is “ruach”, the Greek word in the New Testament being “pneuma”, and each is rendered by the translators as “wind, air, breath”, but for the most part “spirit”, both of God and of men. Man, being spirit, has awareness of God, and may, if saved, commune with God through prayer (Psalms 65:2; Acts 10:31; Jam 5:15). PSA 65:2 O you who hear prayer, to you all men will come. ACT 10:31 and said, #39;Cornelius, God has heard your prayer and remembered your gifts to the poor. JAM 5:15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. Being soul, man has awareness of self (Psalms 42:5-6); and being body, man has through the senses, power of physical perception, which is transmitted to soul and spirit. MAN#39;S ORIGINAL CONDITION… God d man in His own image, after His own likeness (Genesis 1:26-27; 9:6). GEN 9:6 “Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made man. By reference to Ephesians 4:23-24, Colossians 3:10, Romans 8:29, 2 Corinthians 3:18, and Colossians 1:15 it is evident that the “image” and “likeness” plainly have reference to the intellectual and moral nature of man. EPH 4:23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds; EPH 4:24 and to put on the new self, d to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. COL 3:10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. ROM 8:29 For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 2CO 3:18 And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord#39;s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. COL 1:15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. But the Hebrew word used in Psalm 17:15 clearly means a visible form as in Numbers 12:8; therefore it would seem that the image and likeness would have also some reference to the “visible” likeness.
