Dwight Lyman Moody
1837-1899
An American evangelist. Dwight L. Moody was born in North-
field, Massachusetts. His father died when Dwight was four
years of age. He left school at the age of 17 to find work.
Moody was led to Christ by his Sunday School teacher, Edward
Kimball, and later began his own Sunday School class with 13
street urchans. This class increased its enrollment to 1,500
in a period of four years.
Moody did personal work with the soldiers during the
Civil War. After the War, he built churches and started the
Moody Bible Institute. He traveled in Europe and America,
holding campaigns, and personally dealt with over 750,000 in-
dividuals. He preached to more than 100,000,000 people, and
had over 1,000,000 first-time conversions to Jesus Christ.
His work continues today through the Moody Memorial Church
and the Moody Bible Institute of Chicago.

ARTIST’S NOTE: The wearing of the green is indicative of
Moody’s Irish descent. A ruggedness has been worked into the
face to emphasize a part of Moody’s character, which is ap-
parent even in his most tender sermons.
