SERMON ON THE MOUNT… The complete Sermon on the Mount covers all of chapters 5, 6, and 7 of the book of Matthew. It will be quoted in its entirety at the end of this commentary. It is not the way of salvation for the sinner, nor the rule of life for the Christian. When the Lord Jesus preached it, He had not yet established His Church. The Sermon on the Mount is Law, and the Christian is not under Law but under grace. If the Sermon on the Mount then be neither the way of life for the sinner nor the rule of life for the believer, but is Law, then it becomes evident that it is the code of laws for the Kingdom of heaven, which Kingdom, though for the time being rejected, will one day be set up on this earth. Its capital will be Jerusalem, and the Law shall go forth from Zion. In that day "The Lord will be king over the whole earth. On that day there will be one Lord, and his name the only name". (Zechariah 14:9; see also Psalm 2:6; Jeremiah 23:5). ZEC 14:9 The LORD will be king over the whole earth. On that day there will be one LORD, and his name the only name. PSA 2:6 "I have installed my King on Zion, my holy hill." JER 23:5 "The days are coming," s the LORD, "when I will raise up to David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land. In the Sermon on the Mount there is this King, Jehovah-Jesus (or Lord-Jesus), formally offering the Kingdom to Israel, in His own person. The offer is made in Galilee, for it had already been offered by John the Baptist in Judea and rejected. The King, in this great discourse, plainly sets forth the nature of the proposed Kingdom, and the laws by which He will govern the earth when He re-establishes and occupies the throne of David upon His return to this earth. However, there is value in the Sermon on the Mount to the Church, for it is part of Scripture, and all Scripture is valuable (2 Timothy 3:16-17). 2TI 3:16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 2TI 3:17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. Believers, who are members of His Church, are destined to reign over the Kingdom, and therefore should be deeply interested in the laws of the Kingdom. In addition, many eternal principles are expressed in the sermon which are always operative; it is true even now that the poor in spirit are "blessed" that those who mourn, in the fellowship of His sufferings, shall be comforted; and it is true that the merciful shall obtain mercy, and that the pure in heart do see God. While Luke gives a sermon somewhat similar, it is not the same, and the Sermon on the Mount appears only in Matthew, where it is fitting that the laws of the Kingdom should be recorded in the Gospel of the Kingdom. The following is the entire "Sermon on the Mount" as recorded in the Gospel of Matthew Chapters 5, 6, and 7. ==================================================================== THE BEATITUDES – MAT 5:1 Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, MAT 5:2 and he began to teach them, saying: MAT 5:3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. MAT 5:4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. MAT 5:5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. MAT 5:6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. MAT 5:7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. MAT 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. MAT 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. MAT 5:10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteous- ness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. MAT 5:11 "Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. MAT 5:12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. SALT AND LIGHT – – MAT 5:13 "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. MAT 5:14 "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. MAT 5:15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. MAT 5:16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. THE FULFILLMENT OF THE LAW – – – – MAT 5:17 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. MAT 5:18 I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. MAT 5:19 Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the king- dom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. MAT 5:20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certain- ly not enter the kingdom of heaven. MURDER MAT 5:21 "You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, #39;Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.#39; MAT 5:22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, #39;Raca,#39; is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, #39;You fool!#39; will be in danger of the fire of hell. MAT 5:23 "Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, MAT 5:24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift. MAT 5:25 "Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still with him on the way, or he may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. MAT 5:26 I tell you the truth, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny. ADULTERY MAT 5:27 "You have heard that it was said, #39;Do not commit adultery.#39; MAT 5:28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. MAT 5:29 If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. MAT 5:30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell. DIVORCE – MAT 5:31 "It has been said, #39;Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.#39; MAT 5:32 But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to become an adulteress, and anyone who marries the divorced woman commits adultery. OATHS – MAT 5:33 "Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, #39;Do not break your oath, but keep the oaths you have made to the Lord.#39; MAT 5:34 But I tell you, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God#39;s throne; MAT 5:35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. MAT 5:36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. MAT 5:37 Simply let your #39;Yes#39; be #39;Yes,#39; and your #39;No,#39; #39;No#39&; anything beyond this comes from the evil one. AN EYE FOR AN EYE – – – MAT 5:38 "You have heard that it was said, #39;Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.#39; MAT 5:39 But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. MAT 5:40 And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. MAT 5:41 If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. MAT 5:42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you. LOVE FOR ENEMIES – – MAT 5:43 "You have heard that it was said, #39;Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.#39; MAT 5:44 But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, MAT 5:45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. MAT 5:46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? MAT 5:47 And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? MAT 5:48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. GIVING TO THE NEEDY – – MAT 6:1 "Be careful not to do your #39;acts of righteousness#39; before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. MAT 6:2 "So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. MAT 6:3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, MAT 6:4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. PRAYER MAT 6:5 "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. MAT 6:6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. MAT 6:7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. MAT 6:8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. MAT 6:9 "This, then, is how you should pray: "#39;Our Father in heav- en, hallowed be your name, MAT 6:10 your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. MAT 6:11 Give us today our daily bread. MAT 6:12 Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. MAT 6:13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.#39; MAT 6:14 For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. MAT 6:15 But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins. FASTING – MAT 6:16 "When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. MAT 6:17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, MAT 6:18 so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fast- ing, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. TREASURES IN HEAVEN – MAT 6:19 "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. MAT 6:20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. MAT 6:21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. MAT 6:22 "The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. MAT 6:23 But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness! MAT 6:24 "No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money. DO NOT WORRY – – MAT 6:25 "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? MAT 6:26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? MAT 6:27 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? MAT 6:28 "And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. MAT 6:29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. MAT 6:30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? MAT 6:31 So do not worry, saying, #39;What shall we eat?#39; or #39;What shall we drink?#39; or #39;What shall we wear?#39; MAT 6:32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heav- enly Father knows that you need them. MAT 6:33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. MAT 6:34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. JUDGING OTHERS – MAT 7:1 "Do not judge, or you too will be judged. MAT 7:2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. MAT 7:3 "Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother#39;s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? MAT 7:4 How can you say to your brother, #39;Let me take the speck out of your eye,#39; when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? MAT 7:5 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your broth- er#39;s eye. MAT 7:6 "Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and then turn and tear you to pieces. ASK, SEEK, KNOCK – – MAT 7:7 "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. MAT 7:8 For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. MAT 7:9 "Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? MAT 7:10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? MAT 7:11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! MAT 7:12 So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets. THE NARROW AND WIDE GATES – – – MAT 7:13 "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. MAT 7:14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. A TREE AND ITS FRUIT – – – – MAT 7:15 "Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep#39;s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. MAT 7:16 By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? MAT 7:17 Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. MAT 7:18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. MAT 7:19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. MAT 7:20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them. MAT 7:21 "Not everyone who says to me, #39;Lord, Lord,#39; will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. MAT 7:22 Many will say to me on that day, #39;Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?#39; MAT 7:23 Then I will tell them plainly, #39;I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!#39; THE WISE AND FOOLISH BUILDERS – – – MAT 7:24 "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. MAT 7:25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. MAT 7:26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. MAT 7:27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash." MAT 7:28 When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, MAT 7:29 because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law. ==================================================================== THE SEVEN SPIRITS OF GOD… There is, of course, but one Holy Spirit. Seven, however, is the number of spiritual or mystical completeness, and the figure, there- fore, implies the fullness of the Holy Spirit, that is, the one Spirit in the sevenfold plenitude of His power. This is clearly indicated in Isaiah 11:1-2, where we read of the Branch of the Lord, that is, the Messiah, upon whom shall rest… 1.> The spirit of the Lord 2.> The spirit of wisdom 3.> The spirit of understanding 4.> The spirit of counsel 5.> The spirit of might 6.> The spirit of knowledge 7.> The spirit of the fear of the Lord. ISA 11:1 A shoot will come up ISA 11:1 And there shall come from the stump of Jesse; from forth a rod out of the stem of his roots a Branch will bear Jesse, and a Branch shall grow fruit. out of his roots: (KJV) ISA 11:2 The Spirit of the ISA 11:2 And the spirit of LORD will rest on himthe the LORD shall rest upon him, Spirit of wisdom and of under- the spirit of wisdom and standing, the Spirit of coun- understanding, the spirit of sel and of power, the Spirit counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD of the LORD; (KJV) SIN… Sin has many manifestations, and may be said to be any and all falling short of the glory of God, whether in thought, word, or deed. Among the translations in the New Testament from the Greek word meaning "sin" are the following… 1.> Transgression A violation of the Law (Luke 15:29; Galatians 3:19). LUK 15:29 But he answered his LUK 15:29 And he answering father, #39;Look! All these years said to his father, Lo, these I#39;ve been slaving for you and many years do I serve thee, never disobeyed your orders. neither transgressed I at any Yet you never gave me even a time thy commandment: and yet young goat so I could cele- thou never gavest me a kid, brate with my friends. that I might make merry with my friends: (KJV) GAL 3:19 What, then, was the purpose of the law? It was added because of transgressions until the Seed to whom the promise referred had come. The law was put into effect through angels by a mediator. 2.> Iniquity An evil or wicked act (Acts 8:22-23). ACT 8:22 Repent of this wickedness and pray to the Lord. Perhaps he will forgive you for having such a thought in your heart. ACT 8:23 For I see that you ACT 8:23 For I perceive that are full of bitterness and thou art in the gall of bit- captive to sin." terness, and in the bond of iniquity. (KJV) 3.> Disobedience Neglect or refusal to obey (Hebrews 2:2). HEB 2:2 For if the message spoken by angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, 4.> Trespass An encroachment upon God#39;s authority (Ephesians 2:1). EPH 2:1 As for you, you were EPH 2:1 And you hath he dead in your transgressions quickened, who were dead in and sins, trespasses and sins; (KJV) 5.> Lawlessness The complete denial of any rule in life (1 Timothy 1:9). 1TI 1:9 We also know that law 1TI 1:9 Knowing this, that is made not for the righteous the law is not made for a but for lawbreakers and reb- righteous man, but for the els, the ungodly and sinful, lawless and disobedient, for the unholy and irreligious; the ungodly and for sinners, for those who kill their for unholy and profane, for fathers or mothers, for mur- murderers of fathers and derers, murderers of mothers, for manslayers, (KJV) 6.> Unbelief A denial and insult to the truth of God#39;s Word (Hebrews 3:12; John 16:8-9). HEB 3:12 See to it, brothers, HEB 3:12 Take heed, brethren, that none of you has a sinful, lest there be in any of you an unbelieving heart that turns evil heart of unbelief, in away from the living God. departing from the living God. (KJV) JOH 16:8 When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: JOH 16:9 in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; Sin "in the world" began with the Fall of Adam, instigated by Satan (Romans 5:12; Genesis 3:1-5). ROM 5:12 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, be- cause all sinned GEN 3:1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, #39;You must not eat from any tree in the garden#39;?" GEN 3:2 The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, GEN 3:3 but God did say, #39;You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.#39;" GEN 3:4 "You will not surely die," the serpent said to the woman. GEN 3:5 "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." Death, physical and spiritual, entered the world through sin and passed upon all men (Romans 5:12), in that all men are sinners (Romans 3:23). The only cure is belief on the Lord Jesus Christ (Acts 16:30-31). ROM 5:12 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, be- cause all sinned ROM 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, ACT 16:30 He then brought them out and asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" ACT 16:31 They replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be savedyou and your household." Three classifications of sin may be enumerated… 1.> The Sin Nature Disobedience and enmity to God (Jeremiah 17:9; Romans 5:19). JER 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? ROM 5:19 For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous. 2.> The Sin State Complete
